When Ientered the Lords in 2005 a long serving colleague came up to me and said “I hope you realise that you are now one of that small group of people in Britain who are serving a sentence where life really does mean life!” I did think of intervening in the question yesterday and asking when I would become eligible for parole!

To be honest, I didn’t have a clue until today that Peers didn’t get the vote. I can understand why, after Lord Norton had explained it.
Although perhaps a ‘new wave’ of suffragettes will campaign for the franchise to be extended to you, if only to enable you to complain to someone about things which very often are nothing to do with an MP’s remit…
