The weekly quiz – debating the CSR

Lord Norton

Lord Sassoon, the Treasury Minister, repeated the statement on the Comprehensive Spending Review on Wednesday afternoon.   There was considerable competition to question him.  Though the time was extended to allow more questions than usual,  not all those who were keen to ask questions were able to do so.  Pictured above are three peers who did put questions to the minister.

The winners of this week’s quiz will be the first two readers to identify correctly the peers pictured and their qualifications for putting questions on economic issues.

    1) Baroness Noakes who is a director at Reuters
    2) Lord Eatwell who worked for Neil Kinnock as an economics advisor. That probably doesn’t qualify him, but he now is an Opposition Treasury spokesman for the Labour Party in the Lords.
    3) …Aberavon, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the 1980s.

    My Lord this is a bit easy as you leave the pictures numbers and one only has to google images “Lords 26539” etc., to return:

    Thought I would try this once, as I have an interest in Lord Sassoon as an ‘outsider’. But I don’t count, probably.

    Baroness Noakes–former opposition treasury spokesperson; worked at KPMG for almost 20 yrs.
    Lord Howe–former chancellor
    Lord Eatwell–opposition treasury spokesman, has a PhD in economics.

    I think (maybe), that they are:

    – Baroness Noakes, who was on the Inland Revenue Management Board and also an advisory panel to the Chancellor as well as being in charge of the London Business School;

    – Lord Eatwell, who has been Labour’s spokesman in the Lords on economic affairs in Opposition since the early ’90s and is also a Professor of Financial Policy;

    – Lord Howe, who was obviously Chancellor and a Minister at the DTI among other things.

    Carl – you’ve given the game away 🙂

    Now it’ll get harder again.

    Lady Noakes has really excellent experience in tackling budget cuts. I knew ‘Sheila Masters’, as she used to be, first back in the late 1980’s when she was director of finances at the Department of Health and sat on the NHS Management Executive: The NHS review was announced. She had to see the implementation of radical cost savings through, which affected 15,000 staff. There were lots of deficits to squeeze out On her arrival in the NHS, she found the NHS finances ‘most shocking’, an observation I heartedly agreed with her about.

    Persuading NHS Managers that they had to balance the books was quite a challenge. She became somewhat feared by many of my colleagues, I thought she was marvellous…and am still a fan.

    Carl H: The intention this week was that the quiz would be relatively straightforward, encouraging readers to read the discussion on the CSR and put faces to the names. However, it was not meant to be quite that simple. Perhaps I shall need to start taking the photographs myself!

    No one: Rest assured, you are someone, on a par with all other contributors.

    I think it is clear from the contributions that the correct answers are indeed Baroness Noakes, Lord Eatwell and Lord Howe of Aberavon. All those who have contributed have listed some of their qualifications for questioning the minister about the Spending Review. Dave H and Emmy were the first two readers to respond, so are this week’s winners. Commendations to Chris K, Carl H, No one, and Paul B.

    Hmm, now I need to aquire different photographs for what I had in mind for next week’s quiz. There is a Plan B!

    Lord Norton you can simply change the pictures name to avoid such issues. In this instance you failed to alter the Alt-text, by changing that and the name this issue is solved.
