So we won gold at Vancouver – great! We do seem to do very much better at sport these days. I remember when we were constantly lagging – nice to be in front now. Congratulations to Amy Williams

In a nutshell…
Launched in early 2008, Lords of the Blog encourages dialogue between the public and Members of the House of Lords. This is where Members of the Lords write blogs on their specialist areas and talk about life and work in the House of Lords. We have a growing number of regular contributors as well as guest appearances from other Peers. If you'd like to know more about how the Lords of the Blog project has developed since 2008 read our Media Briefing here.
All the authors write the blog posts themselves and welcome your comments. They will try to respond to most comments, but please remember to keep them on topic (read our terms and conditions if you are unsure).
Opinions expressed by the authors/bloggers are their own and don't represent those of the House of Lords, its administration or other Members (including parties and other groups of Members).
This site is managed by the Hansard Society - the UK's leading political education and research charity - as part of its commitment to Parliamentary democracy. If you have any comments about the blog, please email us.

Yes, well done Amy Williams it`s nice to see the Winter Olympics highlights will not be all Eddie the Eagle types. Personally I thought he was great.
Condolences to the Georgian family of Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21.
My BBC local news always celebrates local sportsmen(sportspeople?) and it was especially pleasing to see Miss William’s reaction to her achievement. She seems a very nice lady indeed.
I’ve been following the Curling this year. No idea what’s going on – my interest in winter sports diminished greatly after falling off a ski lift aged 4 – but it’s been gripping.
Her parents obviously had her physically well disciplined right from the start, and what a feminine woman too; Amy Williams.
The money loaded in to professional sport has completely changed the way people think about athletics, since the Atlanta Olympics when the UK only won one gold medal. Vast sums were spent on getting all the equipment to China months in advance of the Beijing games, more than any other non international country.
What is more startling is that many of the West Indian/Caribbean athletes also train in these islands and they win quite a few medals too. Clone gold winning states in the
Caribbean. It is hard to tell though how many of them train in Canada, and then hitch their island’s flag to their prowess.
Money has changed everything. Without it our modern sportsmen could not have afforded the
plane far, whilst doing the full time training as well.
How the Winter Olympic competitors’ pay is organised, is hard to say. The Williams have probably had to graft quite hard to get any funding for their own sporting enterprise, and paid for themselves, to get to any meeting as her “team” ,which she wisely said, is essential for her own peace of mind, whilst competing.
