The weekly quiz questions

Lord Norton

Given the interest generated by the quiz questions, I felt it would be appropriate to 44588introduce some reward for those who get in first with the correct answers.  As a result, as I mentioned in response to answers in last week’s quiz, I am instituting a prize.  Anyone who wins the quiz on three occasions will be invited to tea at the Lords.

This week’s quiz questions.

1. Name at least three current women peers on the Conservative benches who have previously served in the House of Commons but have not served in the Cabinet.

2. Which current Conservative peer is a former Chairman of the 1922 Committee?

    (2) Baroness Fookes

    (4) Baroness Oppenheim-Barnes (shadow cabinet but never actually cabinet)

    1. I found four:
    – Baroness Chalker of Wallasey
    – Baroness Fookes
    – Baroness Knight of Collingtree
    – Baroness Oppenheim-Barnes

    2. Lord Hamilton of Epsom

The ladies in question (with their one-time constituencies in brackets) would include (I think):

    Baroness Chalker of Wallasey (Wallasey)
Baroness Fookes (Merton + Morden and later Plymouth Drake)
Baroness Knight of Colingtree (Birmingham Edgebaston).

    There’s also:
    Baroness Oppenheim-Barnes (Gloucester)
    and no doubt others.

Former chair of the 1922 Committee:
    The Earl of Onslow.

Baroness Knight of Collintree (Birmingham Edgbaston 1966-97)
    Baroness Oppenheim-Barness (Gloucester 1970-87)

    2) Lord Hamilton of Epsom (Chairman 1997-2001)

Sorry for typo – should be ‘Oppenheim-Barnes’

I’m justly outwitted by my fellow contestants over the 1922 Committee chairman. I was referring to the late former MP Cranley Onslow, who was at one stage chairman.

Comes of Googling around to find answers too quickly. I must use more haste and less speed, a bit like the Government!

Congratulations howridiculous, Jonathan, Ulysses, and Robin Lewis: you got the correct answers. Stephenpaterson: as you have discovered, you got the wrong Onslow! As howridiculous got in first, he is this week’s prize winner.

As may be apparent from the answers, there are only four women peers on the Conservative benches who have been MPs and have not been in the Cabinet.

Tea at the House of Lords? That sounds wonderful. If I ever brush up my knowledge sufficiently I’ll give this a good go.

Kyle Mulholland: There’s plenty of time to brush up on the Lords. I’m not confining the prize to simply the first person to get three correct answers.
