I have just come from a conference on ‘European Disunion: The Multidimensional Power Struggles’, so I thought that the topic of the European Union would be a good base for this week’s quiz. As usual, the first two readers to supply the correct answers will be the winners.
1. Name at least four members of the current House of Lords who have served as members of the European Commission.
2. Name at least three members of the current House of Lords who have served as members of the European Parliament.
3. Name the two peers who are members of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).
1) Lord Britten of Spennithorpe, Lord Patten of Barnes, Lord Kinnock and Lord Mandelson
2) Lady Nicholson of Winterbourne, Lord Bannside and Lady Kinnock of Holyhead
3) Lord Willoughby de Brokes and Lord Pearson of Rannoch
1. Baroness Ashton, Lord Mandelson, Lord Patten, Lord Brittan, Lord Kinnock.
2. Lord Bannside, Lord Prescott, Baroness Quin
Baroness Ludford is currently an MEP, but I don’t know if she counts a she’s disqualified from participation in the current House.
3. Lord Pearson, Lord Willoughby de Broke
1. Lord Brittan of Spennithorne, Lord Patten of Barnes, Lord Kinnock
2. Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, Baroness Billingham, Baroness Quin
3. Lord Pearson of Rannoch, Lord Willoughby de Broke
One must wonder how, or whether at all, “power struggles” ‘mesh’ with “ability and enablement needs”
(?)
3. Lords Pearson and Monckton
Frank W. Summers III: I should point out that Lord Monckton is not, and never has been, a member of the House of Lords. See:

Lord Norton,
Indeed I see the error…
1.Lord Clinton-Davis, Lord Williamson of Horton, Baroness Ashton (leave of absence?), Lord Mandelson, Lord Richard
2. Baroness E. Morgan, Baroness G. Kinnock, Baroness Ludford (nonvoting members count?)& Lord Harrison
Lord Norton,
One might urge the clerk to be bit more clear in getting his point across however. As a mere yank of 47 young years such subtlety is often lost on me I must admit….
With all these links, is our influence on and understanding of Europe improved or its influence on and understanding of us?
The problem is that the institutions of Europe are so besmeared with obloquy by our media and politicians, and by self-inflicted wounds it has to be said, that British participation is seen with relief as being, half-hearted by both parties, and thus we pay a bill without getting all the goods.
Congratulations to Len and Dave H, who just pipped Jonathan to the post and are the first two with correct answers.
