Congratulations to Anne Marie Cunningham and Jonathan who were the first two readers to supply the correct answers to the previous quiz. Commendations to all the readers who supplied answers. That quiz covered the law and medicine. This one covers trade unions and religion. As usual, the first two readers to supply the correct answers will be the winners.
1. Name at least three current members of the House of Lords who have led trade unions as General Secretary or National Secretary.
2. Name at least three current members of the House of Lords (other than Lords Spiritual!) who are ministers of religion.
General Secretaries : Tony Christopher (Inland Revenue Staff Federation), Bill Morris (TG&WU) and Liz Symons (First Division Association). I’m sure there are more.
Pardon me for using real names as opposed to the fancy dress!
danfilson: Fear not, it does not disqualify you from the competition!
Hmmm, I’m taking a few wild guesses this week…
1. Lord Monks, Lord Morris of Handsworth, and Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde
2. Baroness Neuberger, Lord Sacks, and Lord Bannside.
1. Lord Triesman, Lord Young of Norwood Green, Lord Morris of Handsworth, Lord Brooke of Alverthorpe, Baroness Dean, Lord Monks
2. Lord Sacks, Lord Griffiths of Burry Port, Lord Harries of Pentregarth, Lord Habgood (on Leave of Absence, so might not count), Baroness Richardson.
Lord Sacks might not count either, depends on whether you’re only counting Christian religions,
My distinction between “spiritual” and “religious” comes courtesy of the Society of friends:
(‘) ‘spiritual’ has the essential definiens sense of “your link direct with God & God’s link direct with you”
whereas ‘religious’ is essentially your subjection-to and conformist-participation with a traditional-dogma community governed by professional-priests-and-preachers.
Thereunder, I question your capitalised-initials use of “Lords Spiritual” –
I could also suggest that, in some vital individual-and-collective-human-development sense, “Peers-Spiritually-Religious” would be a quite complex and un-mind-functional Oxymoron.

milesjsd: The House of Lords comprises the Lords Spiritual and the Lords Temporal. It is a formal designation.
1) Lord Jordan
Lord Brooke of Alverthorpe
Lord Morris of Handsworth
[Lord Plumb (not sure the NFU counts)]
2) Lord Sacks
Lord Carey of Clifton
Lord Habgood
1. Lords Morris of Handswowrth, Whitty and Triesman.
2. Lords Harries of Pentregarth, Carey of Clifton and Bannside.
Thank you;
but neither designation appears to be aligned to deal with the real external on-the-ground and internal body-mind-spirit holistic Needs and Affordable-Hows of the contrasting often conflicting different Levels of The People and of the Earth’s Lifesupports;
Temporal seems to mean Time-bound, and Spiritual to mean Christianity & Religions-bound;
so my question ‘evolves’ into “what sub-designations are applied in order to deal with all the Holistic Needs of both People and Earth ?”.
I don’t necessarily expect any answer, because I am already far-exceeding my egalitarian-versus-penurious-pensioner ‘right’ to democratic-time; quite apart from my democratic-need to await educational-material and quizzes at, and for the improvement of, my practical-democracy-level.
