No, this isn’t a post to encourage Lord Blagger. Yesterday, the House of Lords team won the Rehab annual Pancake Race. Held in Victoria Tower Gardens, the House of Lords team beat a team from the Commons and from the Parliamentary Press Gallery.
The race is held to raise awareness of Rehab, a charity that supports people with disabilities, older people and others with brain injuries, spinal injuries and mental health difficulties.
And why would I complain about that?
Or is it that lots of peers need rehab’s services?
Please, I have some “”mental=Health”” difficulty with your Post, Lord Norton:
since Rehab must surely be about promoting sound and always-improving Health;
and since Shrove Tuesday be sort-of the beginning of a Great Cleansing Fast (the Christian 40-days of Lent);
and the trad English pancake is white-flour and water, fried, then sprinkled with white-sugar; all three ‘junky=like’ ingredients;
where’s the Health-message, apart from where’s there any clearly-measurable-sustainworthiness, in your Peers versus Commons “Rehab annual (sic) Pancake Race” ?
held in Victoria Gardens ((wherever that is, presumably part-of or very near to the two respective (not at all necessarily intimating ‘respect-able’ in this matter) Houses)) ?

((( Aside to Audience:
that a sprinkling of freshly-squeezed lemon-juice is loaded with health-supportive vitamin C and antioxidant, good for as it were ‘cleansing-the-blood’ of cancer-causative-cells / ‘free-radicals’ and/or suchlike, no quarrel, is sufficient for either the Peers or the Commons-ers to claim “Health-Promotion”, fails to wash))).
Victoria Tower Gardens are shown in the picture. They are by Victoria Tower.
How many times do you have to toss, noble lord, and how far,to win such an event?
I enjoyed two things from yesterday’s proceedings at question time. The first was from my favourite peer Baroness Trumpington when she said this “My Lords, is the Minister aware, as I am, that women have great difficulty in taking their proper place in society? Is she also aware that I consider this Chamber a funny old place? Last Thursday I stood in here surrounded by 45 women and began my speech with, “My Lords”.
The second was when Lord Freud finally told the Labour peers some home truths about how economically inept the last Labour Government was.
“My Lords, I am not proud of a previous Government who threw bits and pieces of money around like an out-of-control farmyard muckspreader. We are making coherent provision for the most disadvantaged in a way that you could not.”
The sun shone, the Lords won the toss and presumably charity benefitted greatly. A good day all round.
Love the pic btw.
Way to go Team!
But just remember, you cant eat any more Pancakes as its Ashe Wednesday. No meat or dairy till Easter.
Golly, Victoria Tower and Gardens looks impressive; but so devilishly dark, Lord\Norton.
(Thank you)
We all (or should this be ‘each’) need an appropriate, affordable, and effective re-hab programme, but to be more like 364 days a year than 40, eh ? (even the fit surely need one day ‘off’ annually ?)
and enablements thereto
and naturally we need empowerments including voting-rights to protect and carry on such better-healthy and better-british-citizenship re-habilitations
and thereto such must include all contributions, white hat, yellow, green, red, black, and blue; past present and future; of the said bbc
(now where on this pestering p – c is that confounded logical-connective for “not the same as”, surely the ‘slash tri-bar’ is needed here to keep the BBC in its proper place – )
must dash, be quick, or I’ll be too late to catch even next year’s p – cake as it descends (vertically, Twm ? qualify for “how far” one must toss ?)
Regarding Victoria Gardens… I do seem to recall a song about England’s Dark Satanic Mills… somethignorother about if Jesus walked on the Pleasant pasture Green?
Ah well, people saw such imposing, dark structures as much more reflective of good then than now. Perhaps it was to do with the lack of air conditioning?
Victoria Gardens is in England, and what was it form that old song…England’s Dark Satanic Mills?
Still, I find it glorious. I’m sure it snot as Satanic as all that.
