The weekly quiz – the charitable sector

Lord Norton

A number of peers are active in the charitable sector.  Some (including among the list of new peers recently announced) have been elevated for their work in the sector.  This week’s quiz focuses on peers who are active in the field.  As usual, the first two readers to supply the correct answers will be the winners.

1.  I am a former Director-General of MENCAP (now the Royal Mencap Society) and am currently President of the Society.  Who am I?

2. I have served on the National Disability Council and am Chair of the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB).  I am also President of the European Blind Union.  Who am I?

3.  I am a former Director-General of Age Concern and am the founder and patron of Action on Elder Abuse.  Who am I?

4.  I am a new peer and a former Director of Alcohol Concern.  Who am I?

5.  I am well known for my business roles, including as chair of Carpetright plc, but I have served as chair of a prostrate cancer charity and am a member of the NSPCC National Appeal Board and Executive Committee.  I am sponsor of a hospice in South Bromley and a trustee of the Bowel Cancer and Research Trust.  Who am I?

Most of the answers this week were straightforward, but one or two clearly proved difficult. The correct answers are:

    Lord Rix
    Lord Low of Dalston
    Baroness Greengross
    Broness Hayter of Kentish Town
    Lord Harris of Peckham.

The two winners are therefore Dave H. and Jonathan. Congratulations to them.
