Lord Soley

I hope we haven’t lost too many of you during our recent refurbishment and I hope even more that you approve of the decor!

Sorry but this round of developments was more for the bloggers themselves! We’ve hopefully made the admin part of the site more user friendly (which should mean more bloggers willing to get involved in the futrue).

We’ve also increased capacity and changed the hosting so that we have the freedom to improve the blog ourselves in the future. Hope this explains why things look much the same from the front!

A techie point – your outgoing smtp server [82.211.117.51] hasn’t got a reverse DNS entry, which is bad practice. It upsets my spam filter somewhat.

Good morning Lord Soley, it`s good to have you all back. I`m not so sure I see a weeks worth of changes as yet though, maybe I`ll be surprised later.

I guess much of the changes are behind-the-scenes, because the site looks much as I remember it…

It might be I need to clear my cache (or something) but it really doesn’t look very different…which is a good thing.

I just hope everyone’s little icony thing is different.

Ah, it works now. This morning when I received the email notification of this post, it told me it couldn’t find the post.

I also notice that it appears to be similar in appearance to the previous website. Perhaps the new one fell over and this is the old one back for a short while longer?

Could we not have a Union flag behind the picture of the House in the header instead of Japans “Rising Sun”. I half expect “Sponsored by Toyota, Honda and Mitsubushi” to fade in over it.

I must admit that I had more or less the same thought right away. I wonder what rising sun iconography Britain might have that I cannot recall at this time.

However, in case anyone doesn’t know you are teasing Japan’ stable noonday sun is still the one that is usually legal. Although I think I have spotted the odd Imperial Battle Flag from time to time.

I suppose the intent is to emphasise the “Lords” part of the Palace; I cannot think of any other reason why the Victoria Tower would be moved out of its corner to what would seem to be a position near the Prince’s Chamber.

(By the way, my account has disappeared. I know I have only made a couple of comments so far, but this is just ridiculous. I cannot imagine why this would be related to the refurbishment of Lords of the Blog, though…?)

That said, I now see that my personal avatar still appears as usual. Could it be a Gmail thing?

        I’m confused…

Update: I have managed to access my account through a more circuitous route. Rather strangely, it is recognised in other places but not in Lords of the Blog (so I cannot post under it nor edit my previous posts), which would indicate that it is, after all, a local problem related to the refurbishment. Very curious indeed.

I can only presume that Your Grace is the real Christopher Chandler Fifth Duke of Waltham. If so, why not be an official Author of the LOTB. I do not know who is seated in the lovely semi republican system you Brits have now. However, if this is Your Grace perhaps a friendly protest or address to Lords might be apropriate to enable you to do so. Then the account would have additional security. Some of us would be glad to hear from you. We hear from so few dukes born after the USA revolutionary bicentennial.

Well Your grace one of the beautiful pictures of the Papa Aloni gorge, Greece, on your wikimedia commons page seems to be side ways on, but I am not complaining of anything but a twisted neck!

I see you’ve Googled me, Mr Howell… Well, I wanted to capture the water flow as well as create an interesting photograph; if you turn the picture upright, the water will seem to flow backwards, or at least this is my impression.

(For those who have no idea what we are talking about: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Papa_Aloni_2.jpg .)

          • 09/04/2010 at 6:20 pm

I was pleased to see a bishop as guest host recently and would be delighted to see Your Grace as an author. But meanwhile:

            Μακαριώτατε ο Δούκας του Waltham
Είναι καλό να τιμήσει ένα από τα λίκνα του δυτικού πολιτισμού έτσι! While my Greek is quite awful I appreciated the line:
Λοξή άνωθεν άποψη από ρυάκι που κατηφορίζει βράχια στο φαράγγι “Παπά Αλώνι”, Όρος Όλυμπος, Ελλάδα

I see the oblique view as artistic license an not a sacrilege any of the Old Faith would object to at all. It reminds me of the days when the British had a different feeling towards the old southeastern areas perhaps. It is rather nice for some of us to see you around I would think.

Brilliant photographer then to make it flow backwards!

            Yet another achievement of excellence!

A stunning setting like that (no really)
            AND flowing backawards.

            Heh Heh!

“The Duke of Waltham in popular culture”

The only thing that bothers me your grace, about your Wiki page, is that the link to the above quote leads directly to Narcissism, which is surely a misrepresentation?!

Now I’ve wikied you as well. This message will auto-delete.

The icons seem to be working now.

However, there is a note above this box (Post A Comment) which says “Your comment is awaiting approval” which appears on all pages.

  7. 07/04/2010 at 6:14 pm

We seem to be a few comments short. I distinctly remember congratulating Carl (I think) on the 10,000th.

“I hope even more that you approve of the decor!”

Yep, looks well worth the money. Do you want me to come round and not paint your house for a few hundred? 😉

    • 07/04/2010 at 8:09 pm

Hopefully, any eventual Lords reform will be just as comprehensive.

I’ve just noticed one thing: the time stamps on the comments are now in GMT, even though it’s now BST. All through the winter, the times showed BST instead of GMT – I nearly asked if Lord Tanlaw was going to join as a blogger!

Also, there appears to be an extraneous “PM30” in each of the time stamps…

If you look at comments posted in the morning, they’ve got an AM30 on them. That should give a clue as to the source…
