The weekly quiz

Lord Norton

For this week’s quiz, I thought I would follow the format of last week’s.  It does not require an exhaustive knowledge of peers and may draw on observation.  As usual, the first two readers to supply correct answers will be the winners.

1. The space behind the Clerks’ chairs is used for peers who are wheelchair-bound.  Sometimes the space can get a little crowded.  Name at least three peers who are wheelchair-bound.

2. The proportion of non-white members of the Lords is approximately double the proportion in the House of Commons.  Name at least three non-white cross-bench peers.

3.  Women peers hold several leadership roles in the House, including on the front benches.  Name at least three women peers who serve on the Conservative front bench in the Lords.

    1. Baroness Masham of Ilton, Baroness Campbell of Surbiton, Lord Ashley of Stoke. And of course, Baroness Grey-Thompson, who is already a peer, just not introduced in the House until Monday. She will, presumably, be the only one not to use an electric wheelchair!

    2. Baroness Dunn (to further emphasise your point, probably the first parliamentarian of Chinese descent in the whole of Europe); Lord Kakkar, Lord Patel (one of Lord Kakkar’s supporters this week); Lord Adebowale

    3. Baroness Hanham (thanks to one of your recent comments!); Baroness Morris of Bolton; Baroness Wilcox. (I’m not sure who counts as “front bench” as the bench is only so long!)

    Non-white is difficult! Non-Caucasian?
Noble Baroness Young is gloriously non-white!

Croft: There was one incorrect inclusion in your list – although Baroness Thomas of Winchester uses a wheeled walking frame, she is not wheelchair bound and sits on Lib Dem benches in the chamber. Twm O’r Nant: Leaving aside the incorrect order of your listing, Lord Low is not wheelchair-bound and Baronesses Byford and Buscombe are no longer on the Conservative front-bench.

As the answers demonstrate, there were several names that could be used in each category. Other wheelchair-bound peers include Lord Soulsby and Baroness Falkender. Other non-white peers on the cross-benches, in addition to the ten listed, are Baroness Afshar, Baroness Flather and Lord Hameed.

The winners this week are thus Chris K and Ulysses. Congratulations to both of them. Commiserations to Jonathan, who produced a very full and correct list but was pipped at the post.
