The weekend quiz – the Lords Spiritual

Lord Norton

This week’s quiz is on the Lords Spiritual.   When I give a talk on the Lords, one of the questions most frequently asked is about the role of the Archbishops and Bishops in the Lords.  (The other most frequently asked question is: ‘How do you become a Lord?’)  As usual, the first two readers to provide the correct answers will be the winners.

1. The Lords Spiritual comprise five people who sit ex officio and 21 who sit by reason of seniority.   The five who sit ex officio are the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and the Bishops of?

2. Which Bishop in the Lords lists among his interests “football (Bristol City)”?

3. Which Lord Spiritual took a degree in law, and served as an Advocate, before being ordained?

4. Which Bishop served as a senior management trainee with BOAC, and as Second Secretary in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, before being ordained?

    1. London, Durham and Winchester
    2. The Bishop of Lincoln
    3. The Archbishop of York (which explains the wording of the question, although is an Archbishop not still a Bishop?)
    4. The Bishop of Leicester

The Bishops of London, Durham, Winchester also sit ex officio in the House of Lords.

The Rt Revd John Saxbee, Bishop of Lincoln, lists “football (Bristol City FC)” as one of his interests.

Archbishop John Sentamu took a degree in law and served as an Advocate in Uganda before his ordination.

Prior to his ordination, the Rt Revd Tim Stevens, Bishop of Leicester, served as a senior management trainee with BOAC and as Second Secretary in the South Asian Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Well done to Rob and Finnish Cowl, who were the first two readers to respond with the correct answers. Commendations to the other readers who supplied the correct answers. I was impressed by the speed of the responses.

    1. The Bishops of London, Durham and Winchester sit ex officio, in addition to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.

    2. It is indeed the Bishop of Lincoln, John Saxbee, who lists ‘fotball (Bristol City)’ among his interests. Chris K: The Bishop of Bristol may well be a supporter, but he does not list it among his interests.

    3. John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, graduated in law and practiced in Uganda prior to his expulsion. (Jonathan: It does indeed explain the wording; although saying Bishop would be technically correct, I thought I would offer something of a hint.)

    4. Tim Stevens, Bishop of Leicester, served as a senior management trainee with BOAC and as Second Secretary in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
