The weekly quiz – scientists in the House

Lord Norton

The Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman, was at the University of  Hull yesterday (Friday) addressing a politics sixth-form conference.  One of the points she made about the House of Lords was the diversity of its membership.  This encompassed the experience and expertise of peers.  The House includes people drawn from different sectors, such as literature, the arts and the sciences.  There are some distinguished scientists in the House.  This provides the basis for this week’s quiz questions.

Question 1

1. I have taught at the Universities of Sydney, Harvard, Princeton and Oxford

2. I have served as a professor of theoretical physics and a professor of zoology

3. I have served as President of the Royal Society

Who am I?

Question 2

1. I have served as a professor of electrical engineering

2. I have been Vice-Chancellor of one of our leading universities

3. I have served as President of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Who am I?

Question 3

1. I have taught at the universities of Princeton, Sussex and Cambridge

2. I am a professor of cosmology and astrophysics

3. I serve as president of a leading body in science

Who am I?

As usual, the first two readers to provide the correct answers will be the winners.

Science question! It’s not often I can answer all the questions without looking them up (they’d better be right now I’ve said that…)

For No. 2 you missed, most importantly: Chairman of Diamond Light Source Ltd.

The very… most… noble Lord Norton!

There’s only one thing that…. if you copy and paste all the questions in to your google browser you get an instant answer for each one!

Do you mean they get tea in the Cafe for doing that?!!

It might be possible to choose the most obscure peers, but I have an idea google would be wise to that too!

Without using your browser promiscuously, might be a self imposed discipline,

” but not! but no! Honest I did not use it! I knew all the answers immediately!”

    Regards,

    G

PS I have not got a clue!

Interesting that you did not mention as clues:

      Systematics and Taxonomy Enquiry 2008,
Lord May should be so lucky AND work for Tesco.

      Sub-committee II (Genomic Medicine) 2008-09;
Lord Broers interests not for everybody, I guess

Obviously no room on the Crossbench for Lord Rees!

Weird how they are all Crossbench!

      Gareth Howell:

If all the quizzes are as straight forward as you suggest, why don’t you, figuartively speaking, put your money where your mouth is.

I’ve won these the last three weeks running. Why don’t you do the same for the next three, or even one of them?

Congratulations to all five readers. As will be fairly apparent, each reader got the answers correct. Lord May of Oxford is a former President of the Royal Society and Lord Rees of Ludlow is the current President. Lord Broers was Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, as well as holding (as Jonathan touches upon) other posts. All three sit on the cross-benches.

Michael, already a grand prize-winner, got in first and Jana got in second: as a result, he too is now a grand prize-winner and an invitation to tea at the Lords will be on its way shortly.

    That’s fantastic!

I was starting to think we must all have gotten them wrong!

I’ve really enjoyed doing the these, and I have learned a lot about the Lords in researching the answers.

I’m really pleased to have won, & thanks to Lord Norton for taking the time to write the questions every week.
