Speaker's Corner

Lord Tyler

I too think that Graham Allen is on to a good idea …. not least because I have been discussing this with him and other colleagues in recent weeks.

As Lord Norton implies, it makes sense to bring lively discussion of the issues of the day from a corner of Hyde Park to the centre of our democracy, Parliament Square.  It may be some years yet before the plans to make the whole area in the centre more accessible for pedestrians.  However, when (or if) the traffic is taken away from the southern side, this area will be just as appropriate for a new Speakers’ Corner as the present site near Marble Arch.   Given the frustrating delays in making decisions of this sort, let’s get in early with a firm proposal.

Take a look at www.speakerscornertrust.org to see how similar ideas are flourishing, due to the efforts of former MP Peter Bradley.   And, yes, I declare an entirely voluntary interest as a member of the Speakers Corner Trust.
