Some months ago a friend asked if I would provide a prize for auction at a school where she is a governor. In a fit of generosity I agreed – and then forgot about it!
Until yesterday when I received an email saying ” I won your kind contribution to the Greenside Primary School auction and thoroughly look forward to it. How do you suggest we proceed?” My dilemma is this. I wrote the letter myself thinking it would be less formal. Unfortunately I didn’t keep a copy! So what has he bought? dinner with the Speaker; Big Ben; one of the many attractive shop items?; The possibilities are endless.
I think I have to throw myself on his mercy and hope he doesn’t look me in the eye and say “I bought a three course lunch with all my family and friends on my birthday I hope you are not going to renege on it”
The moral of the story is always keep a copy of letters!

‘..dinner with the Speaker; Big Ben; ‘
Did anyone else suddenly have the image of some poor child sitting with the speaker in St Stephen’s Tower either side of Big Ben with a paper plate and a few cheese and pineapple party snacks on cocktail sticks!? 😀
If she’s a governor can’t she quietly enquire?
If you have promised them Big Ben, you will have some explaining to do to the authorities!
As the person quoted here, I can confirm that Lord Soley donated what he called “one of the new annual peerages we’ve just introduced”. Most looking forward to it.
Good for you if you sent a hand-written letter. Seems you need a scanner to sit alongside Lord Norton’s photocopier. We really need to sort out these office gizmos for you.
PS Big Ben can be bought here:
