Palestine

Lord Soley

At last a bit of good news. Like everyone else I hope the ceasefire holds and that we build on it by working for that permanent settlement that keeps eluding us.

With a new president in the USA and the direct involvement of the Arab states there is a chance of movement. Tony Blair was speaking on the radio about his role and implying that it must now involve the politics of the situation as well as reconstruction and economic development. I agree

I detest jargon, but might the phrase ‘top-slicing’ have a role here?

Is there a chance that the investment America makes in the security of Israel being ‘top-sliced’ to give to the other side with a view to improving services, rebuilding homes and offices and improving lives, with a view to giving Palestinians better options for the future, and thus reducing the risk to Israel’s security ?

For others who detest jargon, what might “top slicing” mean here?

I think expecting the USA to behave differently on Israel shows a bit of a naive misunderstanding of just how bizarrely US domestic politicians are committed to unwavering support of Israel. I wouldn’t expect Obama to change this, either, as it precedes Bush by decades and is one of those foreign policy issues that nobody seems to be able to question. The US news media makes ours look professional and incisive on this issue.
