Catching up...

As I have detailed in a post on my own blog, it has been one of those weeks.  (Mind you, most weeks are.)  I returned today from a conference on Gendered Ceremony and Ritual in Parliament and am in the process of catching up on paperwork.  I fear a consequence has been that I have not had much time to blog.  Usual service, with the quiz, will resume next week.

This week is ‘Parliament Week’ – a series of events designed to encourage greater engagement with Parliament.   Lords of the Blog will be getting a mention on Wednesday evening, when the Hansard Society is organising a session on ‘Parlament and the public: What difference does the Lords make?’   There will be a panel comprising peers who will be familiar to readers of LOTB: Lord Soley, Baroness Young of Hornsey, Baroness Scott of Needham Market, and me.  Other events will include BBC Question Time being broadcast from Parliament for the first time.

On Tuesday evening, I am giving the eighth History of Parliament annual lecture on the Parliament Act 1911.  The date was arranged some months ago but quite fortutiously falls within Parliament Week.  As this is in addition to the usual committee meetings and teaching, it is going to be another of those weeks…

    Parliament Week: excellent idea. Could this be expanded to Parliament Year?

      ladytizzy: I agree. I like to think that this is what we are trying to achieve.

    Enjoy the week. Since the Wednesday speakers are regular posters, I shall endeavour to rouse myself sufficiently to be there. I’m getting keen!

    @Lord Norton:

    I like the picture of you in the office. However, I was unable to read the book titles you have both in the shelves and on your desk.

    That, my mother told me, was the best way to know a man. What he reads is the path to his soul.

    You are indeed a dedicated Lord. But, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! If he’s not careful, that is.

      maude elwes: I have rather a large office and the books that are visible are but a small part of my library. As I arrange my books by subject matter, focusing on the ones you see may give a somewhat misleading impression – especially those on the Labour Party!

        @Lord Norton:

        Now there is a coincidence. I too file my books on subject rather than size. Which makes a dishevelled wall of crazy up and downs, as well as a myriad of uncomplimenting colours. Lots of magenta mixed with scarlet.

        Yours are far tidier than mine though. I’m inclined to allow a lean over here and there.

    I did consider a trip down on Wednesday but I don’t think I’ll be able to make it. Perhaps I’ll have to email you a picture of my cat and let him represent me.
