“Inside Syria” by Reese Erlich

Lord Hylton

Prometheus Books – Amherst – NY  pub 2014 – ISBN: 978-1-61614-948-2235 pages + Appendices, Chronology, Notes on Sources, and Index

The author is an American journalist, who grew up in California as a politically active student, from a Jewish family, who protested against the Vietnam War.

He gives a useful background on Syria since the Ottoman Empire. The Notes especially list the many and various combatants in the internal war in Syria. A chapter links events in Syria with the wider Arab Uprising of 2011. Others examine the role of the outside powers and the situation in the three northern and mainly Kurdish cantons of Syria.

This work does not cover events since the summer of 2014, but will be welcomed as a guide to the complexities.

Such ‘gap-filling’-knowledge and guides are more essential and thereby welcome than it is customary to think or realise.

Even saliently new advances in both knowledge and know-how contain obsolescent, still-conflated and conflating, old mindsets or pieces/insidious-roots thereof.

[Instances could be submitted – but since that’s really about the more widely general field of “information-completing” –

I wish to give way here –
